The Data Services team at the Washington University Libraries supports research and scholarship across disciplines. Data Services offers 1-1 consultations, talks, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops in relevant tools. We support data throughout the research lifecycle through our core services of: data literacy, data managementdata sharing and curation, data analysis, data visualization, and GIS

Core Description

Help Desk: The Data Services team aims to support Washington University users. The team offers a regular schedule of  availability:

Mondays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Tuesdays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Thursdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

1-1 Consultations: We ask that those interested in an appointment with our Data Services Team (related to any of our core services) complete a short questionnaire. Your responses will allow the Data Services team to better assist you and to understand your needs and the needs of the campus community. 

Data Sharing and Curation: Data is shared and archived for a variety of reasons. The value curation adds to our University community is incalculable, as are the benefits of curation to the longevity, accessibility, and availability of said shared information.  

Workshops: Data Services at University Libraries offers several opportunities for groups, teams, departments, or labs to receive workshops in a broad array of areas. If you do not see the topic you need in the core services options below, please contact us to discuss developing a customized workshop.

Newsletter: We send out regular communications via our Data Digest twice a year, and irregular updates via Data Bytes.

Services

  • Data Management Planning - Planning and implementation of data collection, organization, storage, security, collaboration, and documentation practices to support the use and reuse of research data. Check out the DMPTool
  • Data Sharing and Curation - curation means preparing data for publication/sharing. Sharing is often required by funder mandate, journal publishers and researcher communities.​ You can share your data in our institutional repository. Data sharing is critical for is for research transparency, reusability, and citation.​
  • Data Literacy - competency to find & evaluate​, understand & use​, critically assess​, and argue & communicate​ with data.
  • Quantitative Analysis​ - Numeric data obtained from measurement or count. This data can be used to calculate, simulate, model, and conduct statistical analysis.​
  • Qualitative Analysis​ - Text, words, ideas, and observed behaviors. This data is used to describe and interpret human behavior based primarily on the words and actions of selected individuals​
  • Data Visualization - Communicating with visual models of data to make it consumable for both experts, and non experts.
  • Geographic information systems (GIS) are a set of tools and data that allow researchers to explore complex problems using spatial thinking and relationships. It allows for the description, analysis, inference, and communication of place.​
